Yup-Apparently its the best movie ever-at least according to voters on the IMDB top 250. Dislodging The Godfather from the top spot (and putting into third because people were down voting it) this story here on Webware made BOL today Soma For Sale, , to which there was some consternation as to whether this demonstrated a failing in the online ranking system. My thoughts emailed to the Tom, Molly and Jason about whether "Mob Rule" had destroyed the integrity of IMDB were as follows:
First, if the Godfather is no longer in the first place then it can't be mob rule, can it? As anyone who saw The Dark Knight knows Batman always beats the mob.
Second- while I am not really going to get get into a which movie is better, I do think that The Dark Knight (in time) will probably be considered the best movie of the Super Hero genre and could be considered one of the best movies of all time. So I don't want to instantly dismiss it from contention near the top (and trust me as an Italian guy from New York... I <3 The Godfather).
Third-so what if people are voting the The Godfather down? If, after seeing The Dark Knight, I say to myself "huh, The Godfather just isn't as good as that movie" don't I have a right to either go in and give The Godfather at a lesser value than The Dark Knight? Isn't that how it works? As long as what you are rating a movie is an accurate representation of what you think of the movie (based on whatever reasoning or feelings you like) then it is an accurate reflection of what someone thinks of the movie. Hence- don't think anyone has a good claim to get upset about a movie getting "voted down."
Oh and lastly-really-it's just an Internet poll, right. I don't trust the IMBD movie rankings much more than I trust the ESPN daily sports poll or what have you. It's just a popularity contest and right now The Dark Knight is just the prettiest belle/beau at the ball.
