Washwords DC Challenge-Taken Up
May 28th, 2008 | by Frank |My friend and fellow alum Washwordshas thrown down the gauntlet challenging all of DC Bloggers (and other people too) to fill out her quiz regarding our thoughts on the District of Columbia. Despite my last week of “I plan to move to Santa Monica” posts, I do have a few thoughts about the DC area-and some love to share. So here we go. (I care not for her prizes).
1) one reason why you LOVE DC: I love DC for the Public Transit. A trip to SoCal has taught me that. Hands down, best in the country-Metrobus and all. You can get anywhere you want via PT, and the few places you can’t are generally a short cab ride away. Perfect for alcohol loving SOBs such as yours truly. (Now if we could just get them to get over the whole “eating on the train” thing…). A close second-Baseball.
2) one thing you hate/snark/whine/mock about DC (can’t think of any? me either, try Virginia): t’s kind of easy to come up with something not to like about DC. Taxation Without Representation? A completely fragmented and segregated city the moment you are outside of NW or the Capitol area? How about Snarky bloggers who get down on the surrounding Commonwealth Suburbs that do just fine for themselves thank you very much (J/k washy…kinda)
If I had to choose one though, I’d go with…Undergrads and Tourists. Well, I can still tolerate some Undergraduate women…no not even. Which is why I don’t really go to the Georgetown area or the Smithsonian anymore.
3) A DC favorite or secret (can be a restaurant, a deal, a park, an intersection, you name it): If I tell you, it won’t be a secret will it? Okay, the most I’m willing to give up is that it’s only a 12 minute walk from the 8th St. Eastern Market bars to the new Nationals Ball Park, and that if you take the buses back that way you’ll never get caught in traffic. I’ve got better secrets than that, but I’m keeping close the chest…
4) your favorite DC photo (own the rights please! that means you took it): Whoa-bit miffed about the weak-ass copyright explanation. There are plenty of instances where you didn’t take the photo but you’d still be allowed to post it here. Owning the rights isn’t necessary. What about Public Domain photos, or those under a creative commons license? Also, you’d have a hard time using a photo you took if you did so under a work-for-hire agreement. Anyway, getting off topic here….My fav. pic I took that I currently have access too:
Opening Night, Ryan Zimmerman ’s Home Run wins the game. Bedlam ensues…
5) one DC blogger we might not know about: You mean other than yours truly? How about my roommate’s music blog-Metric Reflection. He has a great taste in music.

Thanks for taking up the challenge, softlounge! and once again, making me think with your critique (both about va. about about copyright) I was racing out the door when I posted but it needs some refinements for sure.
I’ll work on it and I love your entries. (If you have another fave photo, that’s okay as long as you know, it’s not stolen)
