Comic Books, 2012, Quetzalcoatl, A Scottsman and The End of the World

According to a lot of people, in the year 2012, when the Mayan calendar ends (ENDS…as in…no more time) Quetzalcoatl comes to essentially end this age of the world, and begin the next. One such person happens to be the most brilliant man in comics today-Grant Morrison. Okay, he doesn’t say that exactly (as the clip above explains) but he is one of the most brilliant people in comic books and trans-formative literature today.
At the age of 30 he went from a straight-edge, no-nonsense fella, to throwing himself into as many things as he could think of that he hadn’t done before (including psychedelic drug use and cross-dressing). Given secret information when he was abducted (or visited) by aliens in Khatmandu (he swears he was only using a little hash at the time) Morrison used what he learned as the basis for his comic book series The Invisibles-one of the most difficult, frustrating, painful and yet ultimately rewarding and brilliant comic books ever written. (Although, I understand, that if you’ve read Phillip K. Dick you’ll understand where this is all coming from.)
Anyway, I don’t really know why, but I think he is brave in his storytelling-existing on the metaphysical edge of very basic concepts of time and space. In this clip (from Comicrelated.com) someone at this weekend’s New York City Comic-Con has just asked him what he thinks will happen in 2012-essentially does he think it will be like in the Invisibles-and Grant gives a very honest and human answer. “I dunno…maybe nothing?” He goes on to elaborate a bit-and he’s got just the most darling Scottish accent, so give it a watch
(And then go give Grant a read-you might want to try some of his more accessible works first, like his run on X-men, Animal Man or his current run on Batman or Superman)
